When I founded my London digital agency Azam Marketing in August 1997, I had a simple objective: use the internet to generate measurable profits and results for clients.
At that time, the internet was still in its early stages. Most businesses and organisations were only beginning to understand what online technology could mean for their future. There was no social media, no smartphones and certainly no artificial intelligence shaping how people worked and communicated.
I predicted that the internet would fundamentally change how businesses and organisations interacted with their customers, and I saw an opportunity to help them adapt, compete and grow through digital technologies.
Nearly three decades later, that objective has not changed. What has changed is everything around it.
I did not create a business that later evolved into providing digital services. Digital is what we have done since day one.
When we started, the digital marketing industry as it exists today did not have a name. There were no established templates to follow, no widely accepted strategies and no clear roadmap for organisations wanting to use the internet effectively.
We were operating at a time when many businesses had not yet realised the potential of having an online presence.
That early start as one of the world’s first full-service digital marketing, design and publishing agencies is important, but it is not the reason we are still here nearly 29 years later.
Many early digital agencies from the late 1990s and 2000s disappeared. The difference is that we built the business around delivering results, not simply following trends.
Technology has changed constantly. The platforms we use today would have been almost impossible to imagine when we started. However, the fundamental purpose has remained the same: helping organisations achieve measurable growth.
Across 29 years, which represents 10,592 days, the scale of the work we have carried out is significant.
My colleagues and I have provided services to more than 1,250 businesses, organisations and individuals. We have designed and developed more than 600 websites, worked with clients across 34 countries and contributed to campaigns that have generated more than £1.6 billion in client revenue. That is £1,600,000,000.
However, numbers only tell part of the story.
Behind those figures are thousands of projects, countless challenges solved and long-term relationships built with organisations that trusted us to help them achieve their objectives.
These results demonstrate a simple point: our work has been tested repeatedly across different sectors, economic cycles and types of clients, and it has continued to deliver.
There is a pattern that many organisations recognise when working with agencies.
The initial conversations are often excellent. The agency appears responsive, knowledgeable and experienced. However, once the work begins, things can change. Communication slows down, responsibility becomes unclear and progress becomes harder to maintain.
From the beginning, I made a conscious decision that we would not operate that way.
Our clients work with experienced professionals who understand their specialist areas and know how to solve problems efficiently. We do not believe in leaving important projects in the hands of people who are still learning at the expense of client results.
Every member of our team has significant experience in their field. When something needs to be done, it is handled by someone who understands the challenge and has dealt with similar situations before.
Just as importantly, we make ourselves available to clients when they need support. Digital problems do not always happen conveniently during office hours, and opportunities cannot always wait until the next working day.
Our clients know they can contact us, receive a response and continue moving forward.
This reliability is one of the reasons many clients have stayed with us for 15 or 20 years or more. They have experienced first-hand that they can depend on us and that we take responsibility for delivering results.
One example that demonstrates our approach clearly is the Netflights campaign targeting flights to Dubai.
The brief was simple: increase bookings.
Within the first month, we delivered more leads than any other agency or lead provider the client had previously worked with. The difference was not marginal. The results were significant enough to stand out immediately.
The commercial impact was clear, and the client was so pleased with the outcome that they gifted us a prize worth more than £1,500.
For me, the importance of this campaign goes beyond one successful project. It demonstrates the principle that has guided our work for nearly three decades: digital activity should ultimately create measurable results.
Traffic, impressions, clicks and engagement can all be useful measurements, but they only matter when they contribute towards meaningful objectives.
The purpose of digital marketing is not simply to generate activity. It is to help organisations grow.
Over the years, we have had the privilege of working with organisations across many different sectors and industries.
Our clients include global brands, established organisations, charities, growing businesses and ambitious entrepreneurs.
Global brands such as Red Bull work with us, alongside well-known UK organisations including Sainsbury’s and Cancer Research UK. We have also had the opportunity to provide services to some of the world’s most recognised brands, including Coca-Cola, Disney, Dell, Nike, Warner Bros., Hilton, Philips, Unilever, Google, itv and BT.
Alongside these larger organisations, more than a thousand smaller businesses and organisations have relied on our expertise to strengthen their digital presence, generate leads and improve their return on investment.
The size of an organisation is not what determines the importance of the work. Every client has objectives they want to achieve, and every project deserves a strategy focused on delivering genuine value.
I have always believed that businesses have a responsibility to contribute positively beyond their commercial activities.
Alongside the donations we make to charitable causes, we also provide digital services to charitable organisations and non-profits without charging for the work.
We apply the same results-focused approach used for commercial clients to help charities raise awareness, generate support and increase funding opportunities.
Previous pro bono clients have included WWF, Great Ormond Street Hospital, the Aspinall Foundation and Battersea Dogs & Cats Home. Our lead generation campaigns helped generate hundreds of thousands of pounds in additional revenue to support their charitable work.
This commitment continues today through the work we provide for non-profit organisations such as the Muslim Community Helpline.
Over 29 years, there have been multiple periods where weaker businesses and agencies were forced out of the market.
There have been times when budgets tightened, expectations increased and organisations became far more selective about where they invested their resources.
Those conditions test whether a business is built on something sustainable or whether it is simply benefiting from favourable circumstances.
The ability to adapt has always been essential.
Throughout those periods, we continued to focus on delivering results for clients.
That consistency is why many clients remained with us and why they continued to grow alongside us while others disappeared.
Building a business that lasts nearly three decades requires more than adapting when things are easy. It requires resilience, discipline and the ability to continue providing value when conditions become more challenging.
After everything that has changed in almost three decades, one thing has remained consistent: our obsession with driving results and revenue.
We do not carry out activities simply to appear busy. We do not focus on metrics that look impressive but do not translate into meaningful growth.
Our focus remains on outcomes that matter to organisations: attracting customers, generating opportunities and creating measurable value.
That approach is not complicated. However, it is much less common than it should be.
The next stage of digital development will bring further change.
Tools and technologies will continue to evolve. Artificial intelligence will influence how work is carried out. New platforms will emerge, while others will decline.
However, none of this changes the underlying requirement.
Businesses still need customers. Charities still need supporters. Every organisation still needs revenue and an effective way to generate it.
The methods will continue changing, but the fundamentals will remain the same.
That is what I have focused on since founding Azam Marketing on 4 August 1997: using digital technologies to help organisations achieve measurable growth.
After nearly 29 years, I believe the greatest lesson is simple.
Long-term success does not come from following every trend. It comes from understanding change, adapting intelligently and consistently delivering value.
Twenty-nine years is not just a milestone.
It is the result of continuing to do the work, learning from every challenge and ensuring that the results we deliver continue to matter.
